Frozen Tides by Morgan Rhodes

17342701 Frozen Tides
Falling Kingdoms #4
Author: Morgan Rhodes
Pages: 413 pgs
Genre: YA, Fantasy
Release Date: December 15th 2015

Rebels, royals, and monsters wage war over the Mytican throne in the shocking fourth book of the Falling Kingdoms series, from New York Times bestselling author Morgan Rhodes.

CLEO: Reeling after a bloody showdown in Limeros ending with Amara’s abduction of the water crystal, and a vacancy in the Mytican throne, Princess Cleo must cast aside her feelings and look toward her kingdom with the eyes of a Queen.

MAGNUS: With the kingdom in chaos, Princess Lucia still missing and quite possibly in danger, and a shocking realization about Cleo, the steely prince is once again torn between love and duty, leaving him wondering whether he’s strong enough to rule his people.

LUCIA: The young sorcercess has had her vengeance after the cruel death of her first and only love. Heartbroken and unable to trust anyone, she allies with the awoken Fire god, who also seeks revenge.

JONAS: After escaping death by the skin of his teeth, the defeated rebel—along with a mysterious stranger–leader reunites with Princess Cleo, only to find himself a mere pawn in a dangerous hunt for the elusive Kindred.

KING GAIUS: Abandoned by Melenia and betrayed by his own children, Gaius flees Mytica and sails to Kraeshia, where he attempts to ally with the famously brutal emperor across the Silver Sea.

I have loved this series from the very first book, Falling Kingdoms, and was very excited to read this next installment. And boy did this book deliver! It is probably my favorite one of the series so far.

Now, as anyone who follows this blog might know, I tend to talk to my sister about the books we both like. This series is one of them and we’ve had several discussions about the books so far. We both agree that Magnus is our favorite character, and after reading this book hopefully there plenty out there who agree with that. Plus, we both feel Cleo and Jonas grew up a lot in Frozen Tides (especially Jonas since I haven’t really liked him until now).

I loved the overall story for this book and once things really picked up, they didn’t stop and I couldn’t stop going either. I wanted to know what was going to happen next for everyone and absolutely hated reaching the end.

And, I don’t want to give anything away for those who haven’t read this yet, so I’m trying to keep things vague. But I can’t even imagine what will be in store for us next. Now that one specific character has gone all crazy and another one is back (*shh* can’t tell *shh*)

Morgan completely outdid herself with this book and the wait for book 5, Crystal Storm, is going to be forever, but definitely worth it.

What are your thoughts?

A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab

A Gathering of Shadows Final A Gathering of Shadows
Shade of Magic #2
Author: V.E. Schwab
Pages: 512 pgs
Genre: Adult, Fantasy
Release Date: February 23rd 2016

Four months have passed since the shadow stone fell into Kell’s possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Rhy was wounded and the Dane twins fell, and the stone was cast with Holland’s dying body through the rift, and into Black London.

In many ways, things have almost returned to normal, though Rhy is more sober, and Kell is now plagued by his guilt. Restless, and having given up smuggling, Kell is visited by dreams of ominous magical events, waking only to think of Lila, who disappeared from the docks like she always meant to do. As Red London finalizes preparations for the Element Games—an extravagant international competition of magic, meant to entertain and keep healthy the ties between neighboring countries—a certain pirate ship draws closer, carrying old friends back into port.

But while Red London is caught up in the pageantry and thrills of the Games, another London is coming back to life, and those who were thought to be forever gone have returned. After all, a shadow that was gone in the night reappears in the morning, and so it seems Black London has risen again—meaning that another London must fall.

Once again, Victoria completely blew me away with her world building, characters, and amazing story telling. I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this and couldn’t put it down.

I loved that this books focus was more so on Red London and what that world is like, including the different people/tribes and the Games they participate in. We really got to experience it, and I felt like I was truly a part of that world. Kell, Rhy, and Lila are every bit as fun, frustrating, and lovable as before (special jackets and all).

Victoria also really showed us her talents with the different languages she created, something I would love to attempt one day. She made it look almost effortless, which I’m sure it wasn’t.

Delving back into this world was like visiting old friends and I loved every minute of it. Reaching the end was sad, but I also know the wait for the last book in this series, A Conjuring of Light, will be well worth it.

For a select group of girls, the Glittering Court offers a shot at a life
they’ve only ever dreamed of, one of luxury, glamour, and leisure. To high-born
Adelaide, whose wealthy family is forcing her into a loveless marriage, the
Glittering Court represents something else: the chance to chart her own
destiny, and adventure in an unspoiled, prosperous new land across the sea.

After a chance meeting with the dazzling Cedric Thorn, Adelaide poses as a
servant to join the crop of impoverished girls he promises to transform into
proper ladies. But her familiarity with upper class life comes with a price:
she must hide her identity from her new friends, mysterious refugee Mira and
fiery former laundress Tamsin, and most importantly, from Cedric himself—even
though she’s falling in love with him.

Everything begins to crumble when Cedric discovers Adelaide’s ruse, and she
catches the eye of a powerful young governor, who wants her for a wife. She
didn’t leave the gilded cage of her old life behind just to become someone
else’s property. But nothing is as daunting—or as wonderful—as the potent,
forbidden attraction simmering between Adelaide and Cedric. One that, if acted
on, would make them both outcasts in a wild, dangerous, uncharted world, and
possibly lead them to their deaths.

Paper Princess by Erin Watt

28678119 Paper Princess
The Royals #1
Author: Erin Watt
Pages: 370 pgs
Genre: YA, Contemporary, Romance, NA
Release Date: April 5th 2015

From strip clubs and truck stops to southern coast mansions and prep schools, one girl tries to stay true to herself.

These Royals will ruin you…

Ella Harper is a survivor—a pragmatic optimist. She’s spent her whole life moving from town to town with her flighty mother, struggling to make ends meet and believing that someday she’ll climb out of the gutter. After her mother’s death, Ella is truly alone.

Until Callum Royal appears, plucking Ella out of poverty and tossing her into his posh mansion among his five sons who all hate her. Each Royal boy is more magnetic than the last, but none as captivating as Reed Royal, the boy who is determined to send her back to the slums she came from.

Reed doesn’t want her. He says she doesn’t belong with the Royals.

He might be right.

Wealth. Excess. Deception. It’s like nothing Ella has ever experienced, and if she’s going to survive her time in the Royal palace, she’ll need to learn to issue her own Royal decrees.

This was actually a surprise book for me. I don’t normally read YA contemporary’s, but decided to give this one a try… and was quite surprised. The more I read, the more I wanted to keep going and ended up finishing it in a day.

Erin Watt ( a pseudonym for two wonderful ladies) did a fantastic job not only with the overall story, but also with their characters. For me, I sometimes feel that the characters I’m reading aren’t always distinct enough, but that wasn’t a problem here. I loved getting to know Ella and each of the Royal boys.

I also really enjoyed the fact that Ella was both strong and vulnerable. The Royal boys and those at her new school make life miserable for her, and though the things they did may have hurt her, Ella never let that hold her back. She stood up for herself, even when she wanted to cry, and I loved that!

My only complaint is that I have to wait for the next book, Broken Prince, that comes out in July. The ending left me eagerly anticipating more (just to warn those who may not like cliffhangers) and mad that I’d reached the last page. And all I can really say to that is… Oh Reed Royal!

The Midnight Spy by Kiki Hamilton

25746459 The Midnight Spy
The Midnight Spy #1
Author: Kiki Hamilton
Pages: 417 pgs
Genre: YA, Fantasy
Release Date: June 25th 2015

She would risk her life to escape…

“What have we here? A midnight spy?”
Nica lifted her chin and hoped he couldn’t feel her knees shaking. “Release me.”
Instead of releasing her, his eyes narrowed as he examined her features. “I didn’t know Mosaba had a daughter,” he said softly. “You wouldn’t be a spy and a liar, would you?”

TRAPPED IN AN unbearable existence, Nica Santos risks her life to escape from her father, only to be captured by one of his soldiers—
until the most unlikely of allies comes to her assistance — but not before she realizes she has traded one prison for another…

As war explodes around her, Nica becomes ensnared in a confusing web of intrigue, romance, betrayal and ancient magic…

I had to chance to read an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review… And I’m so happy that I did. Especially after getting the chance to read Kiki’s first series, I was curious to read something set in a completely different world.

From the beginning The Midnight Spy was full of adventure, intrigue, and fun characters. What you think you know, just like Nica, isn’t always the case, and trying to uncover it all is the exciting part.

Kiki is fabulous at world and character building, really immersing her readers in the story so you feel as though you’re a part of it. I really enjoyed watching everything unfold and wanting even more from the world.

I’m definitely excited for more of Nica and Shanks and what trouble they can get themselves into next!

Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas

18006496 Queen of Shadows
Throne of Glass #4
Author: Sarah J. Maas
Pages: 648 pgs
Genre: YA, Fantasy
Release Date: September 1st 2015

The queen has returned.

Everyone Celaena Sardothien loves has been taken from her. But she’s at last returned to the empire—for vengeance, to rescue her once-glorious kingdom, and to confront the shadows of her past…

She has embraced her identity as Aelin Galathynius, Queen of Terrasen. But before she can reclaim her throne, she must fight.

She will fight for her cousin, a warrior prepared to die for her. She will fight for her friend, a young man trapped in an unspeakable prison. And she will fight for her people, enslaved to a brutal king and awaiting their lost queen’s triumphant return.

The fourth volume in the New York Times bestselling series continues Celaena’s epic journey and builds to a passionate, agonizing crescendo that might just shatter her world.

Once again, Sarah Maas, completely blew me away. Not only is she the queen of fantastical world building, but she is also the queen of character building.

This book starts up where Heir of Fire left off and it gets right to the action. No waiting or holding back, which I love about this series. Everyone seems to be all over the place, at different places in their journey’s, and where they’re all headed is unknown.

For those who’ve read my previous reviews of this series, you know my love for a certain character and relationship. I was still holding out hope for them (and maybe am still just a little bit), but after reading Queen of Shadows, I can see why things have gone the way they have.

I mean, who wouldn’t be crazy about Rowan Whitethorn?

We are introduced to some new characters like Elide and Lysandra, and reintroduced to some favorites like Manon and Aedion ( *shh* and Kaltain *shh*). I loved learning more about these characters and how they feet into this already amazing world Sarah has developed.

So much happens in this fourth installment, I can’t even go into it all, and I don’t want to give anything away. BUT, rest assured this is not the end of the road for our favorite characters. There is still so much left for Aelin, Chaol, and Dorian, and I can’t wait for book 5 to find out more!
