Waiting on Wednesday: A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, which spotlights upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating.

(Coming February 2016)

Four months have passed since the shadow stone fell into Kell’s possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Rhy was wounded and the Dane twins fell, and the stone was cast with Holland’s dying body through the rift, and into Black London.

In many ways, things have almost returned to normal, though Rhy is more sober, and Kell is now plagued by his guilt. Restless, and having given up smuggling, Kell is visited by dreams of ominous magical events, waking only to think of Lila, who disappeared from the docks like she always meant to do. As Red London finalizes preparations for the Element Games—an extravagant international competition of magic, meant to entertain and keep healthy the ties between neighboring countries—a certain pirate ship draws closer, carrying old friends back into port.

But while Red London is caught up in the pageantry and thrills of the Games, another London is coming back to life, and those who were thought to be forever gone have returned. After all, a shadow that was gone in the night reappears in the morning, and so it seems Black London has risen again—meaning that another London must fall.

I am so excited for this book! Every time I read something from this author I just love her writing and world building even more. She’s definitely a top favorite of mine.

After finishing the first book in this series, A Darker Shade of Magic, and reading the description for this one, I’m even more excited for these characters and to see what else she has in store for us. Plus, isn’t this cover amazing!

Waiting on Wednesday: Their Fractured Light by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, which spotlights upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating.

(Coming December 2015)

A year ago, Flynn Cormac and Jubilee Chase made the now infamous Avon Broadcast, calling on the galaxy to witness for their planet, and protect them from destruction. Some say Flynn’s a madman, others whisper about conspiracies. Nobody knows the truth. A year before that, Tarver Merendsen and Lilac LaRoux were rescued from a terrible shipwreck—now, they live a public life in front of the cameras, and a secret life away from the world’s gaze.

Now, in the center of the universe on the planet of Corinth, all four are about to collide with two new players, who will bring the fight against LaRoux Industries to a head. Gideon Marchant is an eighteen-year-old computer hacker—a whiz kid and an urban warrior. He’ll climb, abseil and worm his way past the best security measures to pull off onsite hacks that others don’t dare touch.

Sofia Quinn has a killer smile, and by the time you’re done noticing it, she’s got you offering up your wallet, your car, and anything else she desires. She holds LaRoux Industries responsible for the mysterious death of her father and is out for revenge at any cost.

When a LaRoux Industries security breach interrupts Gideon and Sofia’s separate attempts to infiltrate their headquarters, they’re forced to work together to escape. Each of them has their own reason for wanting to take down LaRoux Industries, and neither trusts the other. But working together might be the best chance they have to expose the secrets LRI is so desperate to hide.

I absolutely loved the first book in this series, These Broken Stars, and have been anxiously awaiting the final book for months, especially after getting to meet both Meagan and Amie on their tour. Such phenomenal world building, wonderful characters, and beautiful writing. They are a phenomenal writing duo, and each book has been better than the last. I can’t wait to find out how this all comes to an end.

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Illuminae
The Illuminae Files 1
Author: Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
Pages: 608 pgs
Genre: YA, Sci-Fi, Dystopian
Release Date: October 20th 2015

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

I was lucky enough to get an early copy of this book a few months ago and couldn’t wait to start reading. Not only was it a brilliant read, but it left me anxiously awaiting the next installment. Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff are a brilliant team.

The fact that this isn’t told as your typical narrative, but as a dossier full of emails, IM’s, interviews, schematics, etc. only made me even more excited to read. I’d been a little unsure how I’d  like it, but from the very beginning I was pulled in and didn’t want to put it down.

First, Amie and Jay did a brilliant job of planning this entire story out. So many details had to be worked out and in place, and it showed seamlessly. Telling the story this way gave it a fresh perspective for me and allowed, at least for me, the reader to view the events as an observer. I also loved that each characters voice was distinctive and clear throughout.

The design of the book, including schematics and web pages, was top notch and beautiful.

And, the flow of the story, just right. Nothing dragged for me and I loved how things slowly began to be revealed. Things definitely got intense and sad at moments, but it only made the world they created even more exciting. It felt as though, at times, that I was experiencing it all like a movie.

Reaching the end was a sad moment for me, I checked a few times, hoping for more, but I think that speaks even more to what a great job these authors did. Waiting for book 2 will be a long wait, but I have no doubt will be worth it in the end.

Waiting on Wednesday: Winter by Marissa Meyer

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, which spotlights upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating.

(Coming November 2015)

Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana.

Winter despises her stepmother, and knows Levana won’t approve of her feelings for her childhood friend–the handsome palace guard, Jacin. But Winter isn’t as weak as Levana believes her to be and she’s been undermining her stepmother’s wishes for years. Together with the cyborg mechanic, Cinder, and her allies, Winter might even have the power to launch a revolution and win a war that’s been raging for far too long.

Can Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter defeat Levana and find their happily ever afters?

I have been anxiously awaiting this book for nearly two years after getting a chance to read an ARC of Cress early. Each book has only gotten better, and I can’t wait for the conclusion. Not only are we getting Snow White’s story, but it’s also set on the moon with the Lunars! PLUS, since it’s over 800 pages long, there will be even more to love.

And isn’t this cover gorgeous? I love it.
