In this modern day spin on Leroux’s gothic tale of unrequited love turned
to madness, seventeen-year-old Rune Germain has a mysterious affliction linked
to her operatic talent, and a horrifying mistake she’s trying to hide. Hoping
creative direction will help her, Rune’s mother sends her to a French arts
conservatory for her senior year, located in an opera house rumored to have
ties to The Phantom of the Opera.
At RoseBlood, Rune secretly befriends the masked Thorn—an elusive
violinist who not only guides her musical transformation through dreams that
seem more real than reality itself, but somehow knows who she is behind her own
masks. As the two discover an otherworldly connection and a soul-deep romance
blossoms, Thorn’s dark agenda comes to light and he’s forced to make a deadly
choice: lead Rune to her destruction, or face the wrath of the phantom who has
haunted the opera house for a century, and is the only father he’s ever known.

About A.G. Howard

A.G. Howard
was inspired to write SPLINTERED while working at a school library. She always
wondered what would’ve happened had the subtle creepiness of Alice’s Adventures
in Wonderland taken center stage, and she hopes her darker and funkier tribute
to Carroll will inspire readers to seek out the stories that won her heart as a
child.

When she’s not writing, A.G.’s pastimes are reading, rollerblading, gardening,
and family vacations which often include impromptu side trips to 18th century
graveyards or condemned schoolhouses to appease her overactive muse.

Twisted Palace by Erin Watt

29519517 Twisted Palace
The Royals #3
Author: Erin Watt
Pages: 370 pgs
Genre: YA, NA, Contemporary
Release Date: October 17th 2016

These Royals will ruin you…

From mortal enemies to unexpected allies, two teenagers try to protect everything that matters most.

Ella Harper has met every challenge that life has thrown her way. She’s tough, resilient, and willing to do whatever it takes to defend the people she loves, but the challenge of a long-lost father and a boyfriend whose life is on the line might be too much for even Ella to overcome.

Reed Royal has a quick temper and even faster fists. But his tendency to meet every obstacle with violence has finally caught up with him. If he wants to save himself and the girl he loves, he’ll need to rise above his tortured past and tarnished reputation.

No one believes Ella can survive the Royals. Everyone is sure Reed will destroy them all.
They may be right.

With everything and everyone conspiring to keep them apart, Ella and Reed must find a way to beat the law, save their families, and unravel all the secrets in their Twisted Palace.

Even though I’m sad to have read the last book (thanks Elle, Jen, and Nina for the ARC), I’m so glad I got to follow this journey along with Ella and the Royals! This was another fun and crazy roller coaster ride.

I’m going to do my best not to spoil anything for those who haven’t had a chance to read this yet.

Twisted Palace picks up right where Broken Prince ended, and it doesn’t slow down from there. New characters, old characters, and even some in a new light, we get it all as Ella and Reed maneuver through the craziness that only the Royals have to deal with.

Probably one of my favorite parts was how much Ella’s relationship with all the Royals had changed from Paper Princess. Jen and Elle did such a phenomenal job of bringing the family together and showing what they meant to one another.

And, let me just say, both ladies did an incredible job with the mystery we had to uncover, leaving readers guessing until the end. You’ll be on the edge of your seat, trying to figure out just how they’ll get out of this mess. Thank you Jen and Elle!

Now… I’ll just wait patiently for Easton’s story… Who else is with me?

Broken Prince by Erin Watt

29519514 Broken Prince
The Royals #2
Author: Erin Watt
Pages: 370 pgs
Genre: YA, NA, Contemporary
Release Date: July 25th 2016

These Royals will ruin you…

From wharf fights and school brawls to crumbling lives inside glittery mansions, one guy tries to save himself.

Reed Royal has it all—looks, status, money. The girls at his elite prep school line up to date him, the guys want to be him, but Reed never gave a damn about anyone but his family until Ella Harper walked into his life.

What started off as burning resentment and the need to make his father’s new ward suffer turned into something else entirely—keep Ella close. Keep Ella safe. But when one foolish mistake drives her out of Reed’s arms and brings chaos to the Royal household, Reed’s entire world begins to fall apart around him.

Ella doesn’t want him anymore. She says they’ll only destroy each other.

She might be right.

Secrets. Betrayal. Enemies. It’s like nothing Reed has ever dealt with before, and if he’s going to win back his princess, he’ll need to prove himself Royally worthy.

Waiting for this book was a crazy long wait, as I’m sure anyone who’s read Paper Princess already knows. AND, after finishing this sequel, it was definitely worth it! Jen Frederrick and Elle Kennedy (our Erin Watt duo) outdid themselves with this sequel, making it even better (in my opinion at least) than Paper Princess.

I loved that only did we get to meet some new characters, but we also got to hear from Reed Royal himself. His perspective was just what we needed to truly understand what took place at the end of the first book. I don’t want to give anything away, so I’ll just say that I love his character even more now and want to hug him (and Easton)!

Ella was every bit as tough as we came to know her, but still just as vulnerable. Life isn’t easy for any them, even if they are Royal’s. But with a little Valerie thrown in and Wade, a friend of Reed’s, things definitely become more interesting.

Just like with Paper Princess, I managed to finish Broken Prince in a day and the wait for the last book, Twisted Palace, is going to be interminable. Jen and Elle developed the story just enough and left me wanting more at the end. I’m excited to find out what will happen to our favorite characters next!

Six Month Rule

30368805 Six Month Rule
Kingston Ale House #2
Author: A.J. Pine
Genre: Romance
Release Date: July 18th 2016

She created the game, but the rules are about to change.

Taurus: Hold fast to your single-minded nature today—no matter how long her legs or how lush her red lips.

Gemini: You were a shining star last night, but reality can be a real—well, you get the picture. Just remember: Tall, dark, and British equals no corner office for you.

Will Evans never wanted a reason to stay.

Holly Chandler wants nothing more than for him to go.

But neither one is prepared for what can happen in six months. Because it doesn’t matter what you want when what you need walks out the door.

Holly’s been busting her butt to make partner at Trousseau and there’s no way she’s going to let some stuck-up British arsehole get in her way—no matter how drop-dead gorgeous he is. But that doesn’t mean she can’t have a little fun in the process. She has a six-month rule: date just long enough for the honeymoon phase to wear off, then walk away before anyone gets hurt. If they both know the rules up front, walking away will be a piece of cake. Or maybe not…

*SIX MONTH RULE is a stand alone book in a connected series.

I didn’t think this one would be my typical read, but figured I’d check it out anyways. And it turned out to be so much fun. I really enjoyed it and am glad I got the chance to read an early copy of it.

One thing I really enjoyed was that it didn’t have the typical insta-love or hate between our main characters. Sure there were a few bumps in the road, but it all seemed right and I loved that Holly and Will’s interactions progressed naturally. Their relationship developed at a good pace and you could really see how they were able to fall for each other.

Plus, getting to see Will with his daughter was too cute. His devotion to her and wanting to be there for her really added to his character. We also got to see Holly’s devotion to her job and her love for her older sister. Both Will and Holly had strong motivations and desires that rounded out their characters.

This was definitely a fun read for me and a sweet romance, all the way. I’m glad I decided to check it out and I hope you enjoy it to!

Frozen Tides by Morgan Rhodes

17342701 Frozen Tides
Falling Kingdoms #4
Author: Morgan Rhodes
Pages: 413 pgs
Genre: YA, Fantasy
Release Date: December 15th 2015

Rebels, royals, and monsters wage war over the Mytican throne in the shocking fourth book of the Falling Kingdoms series, from New York Times bestselling author Morgan Rhodes.

CLEO: Reeling after a bloody showdown in Limeros ending with Amara’s abduction of the water crystal, and a vacancy in the Mytican throne, Princess Cleo must cast aside her feelings and look toward her kingdom with the eyes of a Queen.

MAGNUS: With the kingdom in chaos, Princess Lucia still missing and quite possibly in danger, and a shocking realization about Cleo, the steely prince is once again torn between love and duty, leaving him wondering whether he’s strong enough to rule his people.

LUCIA: The young sorcercess has had her vengeance after the cruel death of her first and only love. Heartbroken and unable to trust anyone, she allies with the awoken Fire god, who also seeks revenge.

JONAS: After escaping death by the skin of his teeth, the defeated rebel—along with a mysterious stranger–leader reunites with Princess Cleo, only to find himself a mere pawn in a dangerous hunt for the elusive Kindred.

KING GAIUS: Abandoned by Melenia and betrayed by his own children, Gaius flees Mytica and sails to Kraeshia, where he attempts to ally with the famously brutal emperor across the Silver Sea.

I have loved this series from the very first book, Falling Kingdoms, and was very excited to read this next installment. And boy did this book deliver! It is probably my favorite one of the series so far.

Now, as anyone who follows this blog might know, I tend to talk to my sister about the books we both like. This series is one of them and we’ve had several discussions about the books so far. We both agree that Magnus is our favorite character, and after reading this book hopefully there plenty out there who agree with that. Plus, we both feel Cleo and Jonas grew up a lot in Frozen Tides (especially Jonas since I haven’t really liked him until now).

I loved the overall story for this book and once things really picked up, they didn’t stop and I couldn’t stop going either. I wanted to know what was going to happen next for everyone and absolutely hated reaching the end.

And, I don’t want to give anything away for those who haven’t read this yet, so I’m trying to keep things vague. But I can’t even imagine what will be in store for us next. Now that one specific character has gone all crazy and another one is back (*shh* can’t tell *shh*)

Morgan completely outdid herself with this book and the wait for book 5, Crystal Storm, is going to be forever, but definitely worth it.

What are your thoughts?

A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab

A Gathering of Shadows Final A Gathering of Shadows
Shade of Magic #2
Author: V.E. Schwab
Pages: 512 pgs
Genre: Adult, Fantasy
Release Date: February 23rd 2016

Four months have passed since the shadow stone fell into Kell’s possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Rhy was wounded and the Dane twins fell, and the stone was cast with Holland’s dying body through the rift, and into Black London.

In many ways, things have almost returned to normal, though Rhy is more sober, and Kell is now plagued by his guilt. Restless, and having given up smuggling, Kell is visited by dreams of ominous magical events, waking only to think of Lila, who disappeared from the docks like she always meant to do. As Red London finalizes preparations for the Element Games—an extravagant international competition of magic, meant to entertain and keep healthy the ties between neighboring countries—a certain pirate ship draws closer, carrying old friends back into port.

But while Red London is caught up in the pageantry and thrills of the Games, another London is coming back to life, and those who were thought to be forever gone have returned. After all, a shadow that was gone in the night reappears in the morning, and so it seems Black London has risen again—meaning that another London must fall.

Once again, Victoria completely blew me away with her world building, characters, and amazing story telling. I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this and couldn’t put it down.

I loved that this books focus was more so on Red London and what that world is like, including the different people/tribes and the Games they participate in. We really got to experience it, and I felt like I was truly a part of that world. Kell, Rhy, and Lila are every bit as fun, frustrating, and lovable as before (special jackets and all).

Victoria also really showed us her talents with the different languages she created, something I would love to attempt one day. She made it look almost effortless, which I’m sure it wasn’t.

Delving back into this world was like visiting old friends and I loved every minute of it. Reaching the end was sad, but I also know the wait for the last book in this series, A Conjuring of Light, will be well worth it.

What do you think?
